Smriti Irani Biography

Smriti Irani was born in a Hindu family on 23 March 1976 in New Delhi, India. She is Half-Punjabi half-Maharashtrian from father side and Half Bengali-Assamese from mother side, her zodiac sign is Aries. Smriti did her schooling from Holy Child Auxilium School, New Delhi, and complete her 12th standard from the School of open learning, University of Delhi. She enrolled in Bachelor of Commerce (B.Com) Delhi University but did not complete the three-year degree course.

Smriti’s grandfather and her mother Shibani Bagchi was the member of Jana Sangh. When she was very young, her parents had invited an astrologer to predict their three daughters’ futures, and the astrologer said their two younger daughters would do all right, “Badi Ladki Ka Kuch Nahi Hoga.” In an interview, Smriti revealed that her parents had no big dreams of her; they just wanted her to get married to a good boy. Later she got married to Zubani Irani, a businessman in 2001, and he is a childhood friend of Shah Rukh Khan.

Career

Smriti wanted to become either a civil servant or a journalist, but her father didn’t allow any of them as he thought that neither profession would suit her. Later in 1998 she participated in the Femina Miss India Contest, but she could not reach the top 9. In the contest, Lymaraina D’Souza had become the winner.

Smriti worked at McDonald’s in Bandra, Mumbai as a waitress in the early days of her career. She Said-

All I wanted at that point was to graduate to the next level, where I would be the one standing and welcoming guests to McDonald’s. That meant more money.”

She appeared with Mika Singh in 1998 in a song of the album “Saawan Mein Lag Gayi Aag.” In the mid-2000, she became a household name when she played the role of Tulsi Virani in Ekta Kapoor’s production “Kyunki Saas Bhi Kabhi Bahu Thi” on Star Plus. This serial on air for eight years and she became India’s most loved Bahu. Smriti says she never saw even a single episode of the serial, though. She also did modeling assignments before her TV Debut. She won the Indian Television Academy Award for Best Actress, Consecutively five times (a record). She left the show in 2007 due to differences with Ekta Kapoor, but later in 2008, she made a comeback in a special episode.

In 2003 she joined the BJP, a party which was then looking after a high-profile showbiz star into its fold. She contested unsuccessfully against Rahul Gandhi for the Amethi Constituency in Uttar Pradesh in the 2014 Lok Sabha Elections. On 26 May 2014, PM Modi appointed her as HRD Minister in his cabinet, making her the Youngest Cabinet Minister at that time.

She is fluent in Hindi, English, Gujarati, Marathi, and Bengali, that’s why she has always been in demand for rallies and campaigning.

Controversies

  • In 2014 Lok Sabha Elections her educational qualification became controversial when she claims her education degrees. In 2004she claimed to have a degree in BA while in 2014 she claimed to have a degree in Commerce.
  • On the Rohit Vemula’s suicide case, she criticized for not taking appropriate action.
  • A number of bureaucrats left her ministry citing her high-handed way of functioning.
  • In October 2014, a furor was created over her decision to replace German with Sanskrit as the third language in Kendriya Vidyalayas.
